; Der »Lanval« der Marie de France wurde zum ersten Male von Roquefort!, Chestre’s » Launfal« zum ersten Male von G. Ellis? und zwei Jahre später wieder von Ritson? publiziert. Roque- fort, der sich durch sein bekanntes »Glossaire de la langue romaue« unstreitig hohe Verdienste um die romanische Sprach- wissenschaft erworben hat, gehört als Herausgeber altfranzösischer Texte leider zu den Gelehrten, deren Verfahren von Gaston Paris in seiner Ausgabe des »Alexis« Seite 7 und 8 nach einer näheren Beleuchtung mit Recht als durchaus unkritisch be- zeichnet worden ist. Auch die von G. Ellis besorgte erste Ausgabe des Launfal ist so mangelhaft, und trotz der Ver- sicherung des Herausgebers, dass er sich einer ganz zuver- lässıgen Kopie bedient habe, so voll von groben Lesefehlern, dass dieselbe für philolegische Zwecke absolut unbrauchbar erscheint. Besser steht es mit Ritson’s Ausgabe, aber obgleich sie für ihre Zeit geradezu musterhaft zu nennen ist, entspricht auch sie nicht den Anforderungen, welche man heutzutage an eine editio princeps stellt.

Eine Neuherausgabe der Werke der Marie de France und des altenglischen Launfal scheint mir unter diesen Verhältnissen dringend geboten zu sein. Wie es heisst, bereitet Prof. E. Mall in Würzburg eine Ausgabe der Fabeln der Marie de France vor. Prof. Mall ist durch seine Ausgabe des »Computus« und

durch seine Untersuchungen gerade über das Leben und die Werke der Marie de France so vorteilhaft bekannt, dass sich diese Arbeit schwerlich in berufeneren Händen finden könnte. Hoffentlich lässt der gelehrte Herausgeber seiner Ausgabe der Fabeln dann auch bald eine Ausgabe der »Lais« folgen.

Trotz ihrer weit grösseren Wichtigkeit — sie wurden be- kanntlich kurz nach ihren Entstehen auf Befehl des norwegischen Königs Haakon Haakonssohn in’s Altnordische übersetzt! — scheint Roquefort bei der Ausgabe der Lais womöglich noch weniger sorgfältig, als bei der der Fabeln zu Werke gegangen zu sein. Prof. Wilhelm. Hertz spricht in der Einleitung zu seiner trefflichen Uebersetzung dieser Lais® — auf die ich hier ganz besonders aufmerksam machen möchte — von dem »un- glaublich schlecht edierten Texte« Itoquefort's. .

Roquefort hat eigene Abschriften nur von den in den Pariser Handschriften befindlichen Lais besessen; die der übrigen neun sind teils von Mr. Douce, teils von einem gewissen M. Cohen besorgt worden; eine Abschrift des »Lai des deux amants« (wohl eine zweite) verdankt er M. de la Rue.

Wie wenig zuverlässig diese Abschriften waren, ınag ein Vergleich der ersten Verse des Prologs in ihrer handschrift- lichen Gestalt mit den entsprechenden Versen in Roquefort’s Ausgabe zeigen. Sie lauten in der Handschrift (Harl. 978):

Anstatt sich nun auch für die drei übrigen Lais, den Guigemar, Lanval und Ywenec Abschriften aus Harl. 978 zu verschaffen, legte Roquefort seltsamerweise für diese den Text der Pariser Handschrift, resp. Handschriften zu Grunde (der Ywenee ist nämlich in zwei Pariser Handschriften erhalten) und setzte dann allerdings seinen Text, um äussere Gleich- förmigkeit zu erzielen, in den normännischen Dialekt um. Für den Ywenec wurde ihm dies nicht schwer. Derselbe war bereits von Ellis in seinen Specimens nach Harl. 978 veröffentlicht worden; M. Cohen hatte auch den Guigemar mit der Londoner Handschrift kollationiert und Lanval scheint demnach das einzige Lai zu sein, das ausschliesslich nach der Pariser Handschrift herausgegeben ist. |

Gierade dieses Lai aber muss sich einer ganz besonderen Popularität erfreut haben. u

Es ist in drei Handschriften — alle übrigen mit Aus- nahme des Ywenec höchstens nur in zwei — erhalten, wurde, wie ich weiter unten darzulegen versuchen will, später zu einem umfangreicheren Gedichte verarbeitet und in dieser er- weiterten Fassung von Thomas Chestre in’s Englische übersetzt.

Von den drei Handschriften, in denen der Lanval der Marie de France erhalten ist, gehören zwei, nämlich Harl. 978 und Cotton. Vespas. B. XIV der Bibliothek des British Museum in London, die dritte Ms. fr. 2168 (nach älterer Bezeichnung Ms. du roi 7989) der Bibliotheque Nationale zu Paris an. Auf eine nähere Beschreibung der Handschriften muss ich hier ver- ziehten und auf die betreffenden Kataloge verweisen. Nur so viel mag gesagt sein, dass keine der drei Handschriften den beiden übrigen zur Vorlage gedient haben kann, und dass dem- nach Lesarten, welche in allen drei, oder auch nur in je zwei Handschriften übereinstimmen, mit nahezu absoluter Bestimmt- heit als die ursprünglichen angesehen werden können.

Mit a ist die Vorderseite, mit b die Rückseite eines Blattes, mit 1 die erste, mit 2 die zweite Spalte einer Seite bezeichnet ; f. 35 b,! bedeutet daher Blatt 35, Rückseite, erste Spalte.

Auch auf die Lebensumstände der Marie de France, be- ziehungsweise die Hypothesen, die man darüber aufgestellt hat, kann ich hier nicht näher eingehen und verweise betreffs der- selben auf Roquefort, auf Mall’s Dissertation! und vor allem auch auf W. Hertz’ Einleitung zu seiner Uebersetzung der Lais.

Die vorliegende Ausgabe des Lanval ist ein genauer Abdruck des Manuscrit francais 2168 der Pariser National-

Bibliothek, also der nämlichen Handschrift, die Roquefort seinem Texte zu Grunde legte. Ich habe überall die Abkürzungen des Originals aufgelöst, dieselben jedoch durch Kursivdruck ge- kennzeichnet, so dass sich jeder Kenner altfranzösischer Manu- seripte mit Leichtigkeit das Original rekonstruieren kann. Selbstverständlich habe ich mich überall, wo ich eine Abkürzung auflöse, der Form bedient, die der Schreiber der Handschrift selbst‘-gebraucht haben würde. Deshalb lese ich z. B. nicht qui und que, sondern Ai und XAe, nicht molt, sondern mout, nicht sanlant oder samblant, sondern sanblant; aus dem näm- lichen Grunde ist quant, quwier, reqwist u. s. w. beibehalten worden. |

Zwischen u und v, i und j ist ebenso wie in der Hand- schrift nicht unterschieden. Et, das im Original stets durch die bekannte der Zahl 7 ähnliche Abkürzung ausgedrückt ıst, gebe ich im Texte absichtlich nicht durch Kursivdruck wieder ; vielleicht hätte übrigens statt et nur egelesen werden müssen. Wenn es den Ueberblick nicht störte habe ich hie und da in

‚der Handschrift fehlende Worte gleich in den Text gesetzt,

und solche Zusätze in runde Klammern eingeschlossen ; Worte, Silben und einzelne Buchstaben dagegen, die sich allerdings in der Handschrift finden, aber nach meiner Ansicht getilgt werden müssen, durch eckige Klammern bezeichnet. So steht z. B. v. 21 in der Handschrift nur Por sa ualor por largece, v. 400 dagegen je le vous ples. Eine Interpunktion findet sich in unserer Händschrift natürlich nicht; überhaupt unter- scheidet sich dieselbe durch nichts von ähnlichen Handschriften aus gleicher Zeit. Im Grossen und Ganzen ist Cod. Paris. fr. 21683 sehr leserlich; einzelne Buchstaben können allerdings in gewissen Verbindungen leicht mit anderen Buchstaben ver- wechselt werden. So erscheinen mir folgende Worte im Lanval zweifelhaft: v. 6 prex oder prox — v. 48 witrer oder vutrer — v. 92 neoit oder ueoit — v. 56 neut oder neuc — v. 126 gerpirai oder genpirai — v. 161 voures oder vaures — v. 162 lui oder lu — v. 194 esfrei oder esfroi — v. 201 bioen oder

öftentlicht. Auch hier habe ich mich bestrebt, einen diplomatisch genauen Abdruck der Handschrift zu geben, und habe deshalb vor allem auch die Buchstaben p und 3 beibehalten, die bei . Ritson durchweg durch th, resp. durch y oder gh ersetzt sind. Ellis hat 3 beibehalten, für p aber ebenfalls th gesetzt. Im Uebrigen sind bei der Wiedergabe dieses Textes die nämlichen Grundsätze, wie beim Lanval massgebend gewesen. Bemerken möchte ich, dass ich vielleicht statt Pou richtiger Pow gelesen hätte. | Ueberhaupt muss ich in Anbetracht der typographischen

Schwierigkeiten, die wir zu bekämpfen hatten — es konnte nämlich nur je ein halber Bogen gesetzt werden, von dem dann die ganze Auflage hergestellt wurde — um nachsichtige Be-

urteilung der Fehler und etwaigen Inconsequenzen meiner Arbeit bitten.

Fehler, die bei der Korrektur übersehen und erst im weiteren Verlaufe der Arbeit wahrgenommen worden waren, konnten nicht mehr getilgt; ausgelassene Worte nicht mehr hinzugefügt werden.

Schon hier möchte ich auf das Hauptversehen dieser Art nämlich auf v. 563 des Lanval hinweisen, wo im Originale anstatt eines zwei Verse, nämlich

Les sorciels brus et bel le front

Et le eif ceresp et aukes blont stehen. Die Bezeichnung der Verse von 564 bis mit 578 ist demnach falsch und sollte um je eine Stelle höher gerückt werden. In Betreff der übrigen noch nachträglich wahrge- nommenen Fehler und Versehen verweise ich auf dieam Ende des Programmes befindlichen »Zusätze und Berichtigungen«.

Chestre’s Launfal ist nicht, wie man bisher allgemein an- genommen zu haben scheint, eine direkte Bearbeitung des Lanval der Marie de France, sondern, wie es aus dem Texte selbst zur Evidenz hervorgeht, die Bearbeitung einer erweiterten Fassung dieses Gedichtes, beziehungsweise einer Verschmelzung dreier Gedicht zu einem, nämlich in erster Linie des Lanval selbst, dann des von Roquefort gleichfalls der Marie de France zugeschriebenen Graelens! (Aufenthalt im Hause des Bürger- meisters zu Caerleon), und eines dritten Gedichtes (Kampf mit dem lombardischen Ritter Syr Valentyne), das ich bis jetzt nicht habe identifizieren können. Chestre spricht v. 474 und v. 741 ausdrücklich von seiner französischen Vorlage. Diese Vorlage kann nicht der Lanval der Marie de France gewesen sein, denn gerade diese Stellen finden sich in ihrem Lanval nicht.

Die Umwandlung der mytbischen Insel Avalon in das prosaische Oleron (Departement de la Charente-Inferieure) weist ferner auf einen französischen Bearbeiter hin, dem die keltischen Sagen nicht geläufig waren, den wir also in Frankreich selbst zu suchen haben.

Schliesslich habe ich noch die angenehme Pflicht, auch F öffentlich meinem hochverehrten Lehrer Herrn Professor Konrad Hofmann in München und meinem Freunde Herrn Julius Schade : in London für die freundlich» Unterstützung, die sie meiner x Arbeit angedeihen liessen, meinen herzlichsten Dank zu sagen. Der letztere war so freundlich den Launfal noch einmal mit der Handschrift des British Museum zu kollationieren ; der erstere unterstützte mich überhaupt nach altgewohnter Weise mit seinem Rate, insbesondere aber verdanke ich ihm eine Reihe von Emendationsvorschlägen, die ich leider, da der Druck schon zum grössten Teile vollendet war, nur teilweise benutzen konnte.

Meine Ausgabe der vorliegenden Gedichte soll überhaupt nicht eine sogenannte kritische Ausgabe sein. Mein Zweck ist, die beiden Handschriften getreu wiederzugeben, ein Zurückgehen auf dieselben (besonders gilt dies vom Launfal) fortan unnötig zu machen, und um es kurz zu sagen, Material für Hände herbeizuschaffen, die zum Aufbauen berufener sind, als die meinen. Ich bitte, wenn ich auch diese bescheidene Aufgabe nicht ganz gelöst haben sollte, um nachsichtige Beurteilung.

‘»Launfalus miles«. Abweichend von Ellis und Ritson glaube

ich »Launfalus« und nicht nur »Launfal« lesen zu müssen. Am 1 befindet sich oben ein Abkürzungszeichen, das ich nicht als blossen Schnörkel ansehen zu dürfen glaube. Aus dem nämlichen Grunde habe ich z. B. v. 500 und v. 575 »Launfales« gelesen. Vergl. v. 401, 615, 1013 und 1025.

. 19. Ueber »Banboozt« vergl. Ritson, Band III, Seite 246. . 67. »be nones«. Nach dem Vorgange von Morris und Skeat

und mit Rücksicht auf die moderne Schreibung »the nonce« ist absichtlich »be nones« und nicht »ben ones« abgeteilt worden.
